Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Poems II 1079
Headnote: "Composed as a poem expressing my grievances"
This poem was composed as a poem of grievance. I who have passed the years of no account do not now even think the world sorrowful, he says. Having lived long in obscurity, he has grown so used to hardship that he no longer even feels the world to be painful. The depth of a resignation that has passed beyond lament leaves an all the stronger impression of his misfortune.
The author, "the monk Shun'e," was a son of Minamoto no Toshiyori. A monk of Tōdaiji, he named his own lodging at Shirakawa the Karin'en and gathered poets there for poetry meetings.
It has the same headnote as the next poem, 1080, and both express the thoughts of one who has grown old. Where this poem says the poet no longer even finds the world sorrowful, the next says the sorrow of life is unchanged but the grief of age has been added, so the two contrast in their thoughts on the passing years.
First line, "kazu narade": "not counting as anything," a person of no account. It is the same first line as 1096 of this book and also recalls "kazu naranedomo" in the fifth line of 1077.
Second line, "toshi henuru mi wa": "nuru" is the attributive of the perfective "nu," "I who have passed the years."
Third line, "imasara ni": "now, at this late hour."
Fourth line, "yo o ushi to dani": "dani" is an adverbial particle meaning "even."
Fifth line, "omowazarikeri": "keri" is exclamatory, expressing the realization that he does not even think so.
