from the fire burning in a hut,
faint as if not there,
does even the rising smoke
turn at last into a cloud?

Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Poems II 1091
Headnote: "Composed on seeing smoke rising from a hut by the mountain fields"
This poem was composed on seeing smoke rising from a hut used to watch over mountain fields. Does even the smoke rising from a fire so faint it scarcely seems there become a cloud, he asks. The fire burned in a humble hut among the hills is faint, yet he wonders whether the smoke rising from it will become a cloud once it reaches the sky, thinking on the fate of faint things. It can also be read as laying over it thoughts of the future of one who goes unnoticed.
The author, "Tachibana no Morinaga," was a poet of the late Heian period whose biography is not known in detail.
It shares "tatsu keburi," rising smoke, with the next poem, 1092, both singing of smoke rising from a mountain hut. The text gives the first line as "oyamakuni no," which does not agree with "oyamata no" in the reading line. Read against the headnote's "hut by the mountain fields," the reading line fits the sense better, but here the text is followed.
First line, "oyamakuni no": a line following the text, describing a place among the hills. It has six syllables, one too many.
Second line, "io ni taku hi no": "of the fire burned in a hut."
Third line, "arinashi ni": "so faint it scarcely seems to be there."
Fourth line, "tatsu keburi mo ya": "ya" is an interrogative binding particle closing with "ran" in the fifth line. It is the same phrase as "tatsu keburi" in the third line of the next poem, 1092.
Fifth line, "kumo to naruran": "ran" is the auxiliary of present conjecture, "does it become a cloud?"
