and as it seems someone calls,
how wet my sleeves become

Commentary
Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Poems II 1090

Headnote: "Composed on a night of fierce wind when I was living in the mountain village of Tanakami"
This poem was composed on a night of fierce wind while he was living in the mountain village of Tanakami. My cedar door is beaten by the wind from the deep hills, and as it seems someone calls, my sleeves are wet, he says. The sound of the violent wind sweeping down from the mountains and beating on the door sounds like a visitor knocking. But since no one actually comes, each time his loneliness deepens and his sleeves grow wet with tears, singing of the solitude of a night in a mountain village.
The author, "Minamoto no Toshiyori Ason," was a son of Minamoto no Tsunenobu. At the command of Retired Emperor Shirakawa he compiled the Kin'yō Wakashū, and he was known for a style rich in new ideas.
The preceding poem, 1089, is by the author's son, Minamoto no Toshishige, so poems by father and son stand side by side. It also shares the fierce wind of a mountain village with 1098 of this book, in which the poet, woken by the wind through the boards, imagines the storm in the valley.

First line, "maki no to o": "maki" is fine timber such as cedar or cypress, and the line means a plank door made of it.
Second line, "miyama oroshi ni": "by the wind sweeping down from the deep mountains."
Third line, "tatakarete": "being knocked upon," likening the sound of the wind to someone knocking on the door.
Fourth line, "tou ni tsukete mo": "each time it seems someone has come to call."
Fifth line, "nururu sode kana": "how my sleeves grow wet with tears," with "kana" an exclamatory final particle.
