Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Poems II 1097
Headnote: "Sent to Sagami at a time when news of the world's fleetingness was heard more than usual"
At a time when more than the usual reports were heard of people dying, he sent this poem to Sagami. Who will recall me with pity, when even while I live no one comes to call, he says. Hearing of the fragility of human life, he thinks of what will follow his own death, and laments that since no one visits him even now while he is alive, surely no one will remember him once he is gone. It is a poem confiding a lonely heart to Sagami, a poet close to him.
The author, "Fujiwara no Kanefusa Ason," was a son of Fujiwara no Kanetaka. A grandson of Fujiwara no Michikane, he was known for his deep love of waka. Sagami was a woman poet who had been the wife of Ōe no Kinsuke.
It shares the fifth line "tou hito mo nashi" with 1058 of this book. Where 1058 says no one visits because of the depth of the mountains one enters on leaving the world, this poem says no one visits one who still lives in the world.
First line, "aware tomo": "with pity."
Second line, "tare ka wa ware o": "ka wa" is a rhetorical binding particle closing with "mu" in the third line.
Third line, "omoiidemu": "mu" is the attributive of the conjectural auxiliary, "who will remember me? No one." The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "aru yo ni dani mo": "aru yo" is this world while one is alive, and "dani" means "even."
Fifth line, "tou hito mo nashi": "no one comes to call." It is the same fifth line as 1058 of this book.
