Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Poems II 1098
Headnote: "Sent on the morning after a night of fierce wind, when the former Major Counselor Kintō was living at Nagatani"
While Fujiwara no Kintō was living at Nagatani, his son sent this poem on the morning after a night of fierce wind. Woken by the wind through the boards of the old home, I thought of the storm in your valley, he says. Since even in the house in the capital the wind through the cracks was enough to wake him, he wonders how fierce the storm must have been in the deep valley of Nagatani, showing concern for his father, who had taken the tonsure and lived in a mountain village.
The author, "Middle Counselor Sadayori," is Fujiwara no Sadayori. A son of Fujiwara no Kintō, he rose to provisional middle counselor. Like his father, he excelled in waka.
The next poem, 1099, is Kintō's reply to this one. And 1061 of this book is also a poem sent to Kintō while he lived at Nagatani.
First line, "furusato no": "of the place where you once lived," the house in the capital Kintō had left. It is the same phrase as "furusato no" in the third line of the next poem, 1099.
Second line, "itama no kaze ni": "by the wind through the cracks between the boards."
Third line, "nezameshite": "waking in the night."
Fourth line, "tani no arashi o": "the storm in the valley," the valley of Nagatani where Kintō lived. It answers "tanikaze no" in the first line of the next poem, 1099.
Fifth line, "omoi koso yare": "koso" is an emphatic binding particle closing with the realis "yare," "I thought of it," echoed by "omoiyaritsure" in the fifth line of the next poem.
