Onozukara areba aru yo ni nagaraete oshimu to hito ni mienubeki kana - Senzai Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

おのづからあればある世にながらへて
惜しむと人に見えぬべきかな

Roma-ji: Onozukara areba aru yo ni nagaraete oshimu to hito ni mienubeki kana
English Translation: Of its own accord,
in a world that goes on
while one is alive,
I live on, and surely seem
to others to cling to life
Meaning: Living on of my own accord in a world that goes on as long as one lives, I will surely seem to others to be clinging to my life.
Commentary: Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Poems II 1113

Headnote: "Composed as a poem expressing my grievances in a hundred-poem sequence"
This poem was composed as a poem of grievance in a hundred-poem sequence. Living on of my own accord in a world that goes on while one lives, I will surely seem to others to cling to life, he says. Though he is not particularly attached to life, as he lives on without leaving the world or dying, others will see him as one who clings to life, and he sings of the discomfort of a self that goes on living without wishing to.
The author, "Fujiwara no Teika," was a son of Fujiwara no Shunzei. He later became one of the compilers of the Shin Kokin Wakashū and compiled the Shin Chokusen Wakashū.
It has the same headnote as the next poem, 1114, and the poems of grievance from a hundred-poem sequence continue. It also shares "nagarau," to live on, with "nagarauru kana" in the fifth line of 1126 of this book.

First line, "onozukara": "of its own accord, as things go."
Second line, "areba aru yo ni": "in a world that goes on as long as one is alive," repeating "aru" to express a life left to take its course.
Third line, "nagaraete": "living on." It shares "nagarau" with "nagarauru kana" in the fifth line of 1126 of this book.
Fourth line, "oshimu to hito ni": "to others, as one who clings to life."
Fifth line, "mienubeki kana": "nu" is intensive and "beki" the attributive of the conjectural "beshi," "I shall surely seem so."
