Book Eighteen Miscellaneous Poems III 1181
Headnote: "Composed on deutzia flowers"
This poem was composed on deutzia flowers. Deutzia, how showy you are! The waves of Kakeshima once crossed the rocks just so, he says. He likens the white deutzia in full bloom to white waves surging over the rocks, and in calling out to the flowers that their lavish blooming is a bit much lies the humorous spirit. Likening white deutzia to waves is a common conceit in waka.
The author, "Minamoto no Toshiyori Ason," was a son of the Major Counselor Minamoto no Tsunenobu. He was active in the poetry circle of Emperor Horikawa and compiled the Kin'yō Wakashū at the command of Retired Emperor Shirakawa.
It is the second of the humorous poems, following the spring blossoms of the preceding poem with the deutzia of summer.
First line, "u no hana yo": an address to the deutzia, with "yo" an interjectory particle of address. Taking up the "hana" of the preceding poem, 1180, it moves on to the flowers of summer.
Second line, "ide kotogotoshi": "ide" is a word of exclamation, "why," and "kotogotoshi" means showy or overdone. The poem pauses here.
Third line, "Kakeshima no": understood as a place name.
Fourth line, "nami mo sa koso wa": "sa" means "in that way," pointing to the blooming of the deutzia. "Koso," an emphatic binding particle, closes with "shika" in the fifth line.
Fifth line, "iwa o koeshika": "shika," the perfective form of the past "ki," closes the binding. The whiteness of the deutzia is overlaid on the white waves crossing the rocks.
