Book Eighteen Miscellaneous Poems III 1182
Headnote: "Composed on irises on the fifth day of the fifth month"
This poem was composed on irises at the Boys' Festival on the fifth day of the fifth month. Iris hung on my sleeve today, put down roots in my sleeve; do you not know the "uki" lies in me? he says. On the festival day it was the custom to hang irises on sleeves and eaves. Since the iris roots in "uki," deep mire, he calls on it to root in the sleeve of one who carries "uki," misery, of the same sound, a playful poem that pours out his woes to the iris.
The author, "Dōin Hōshi," was a son of Fujiwara no Kiyotaka. His lay name was Atsuyori, and he is known for devoting himself to poetry with great zeal even into old age.
It is the third of the humorous poems, following the deutzia of the preceding poem with the irises of summer.
First line, "kyō kakuru": "today" is the festival of the fifth day of the fifth month, and "kakuru" is the attributive of "kaku," to hang.
Second line, "tamoto ni ne sase": "ne sase" is the imperative of "ne sasu," to put down roots, a call to the "ayamegusa" of the third line to root in his sleeve.
Third line, "ayamegusa": the iris, in the form of an address. The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "uki wa waga mi ni": "uki" plays on "uki," a deep marsh of mire, and "uki," wretched.
Fifth line, "ari to shirazu ya": "ya" is an interrogative final particle, asking the iris, "do you not know?"
