Book Eighteen Miscellaneous Poems III 1183
Headnote: "Composed on hunting by torchlight"
This poem was composed on hunting by torchlight, a summer night's hunt in the mountains in which torches are lit and the deer drawn to the fire are shot. Hunting by torchlight, dawn broke on Mount Hakone while I tried to meet the deer coming near twice and thrice, he says. Playing on the "box," "hako," in "Hakone," he strings together words associated with a box, "futa" the lid, "mi" the body, "au" to fit, and "ake" to open, and in this lies the wit of the humorous poem.
The author, "Tachibana no Toshitsuna Ason," was a son of the Regent Fujiwara no Yorimichi and was adopted by Tachibana no Toshitō. He rose to master of the palace repairs office and, because he kept a mountain villa at Fushimi, was called the Fushimi Master of Repairs.
It is the fourth of the humorous poems, treating summer torch hunting.
First line, "tomoshi shite": "tomoshi" is the summer night's hunt in which deer are shot by torchlight.
Second line, "Hakone no yama ni": Hakone is a mountain in Sagami, and its "hako," box, draws in the associated words that follow.
Third line, "akenikeri": "ake" plays on the dawn breaking and on a box being opened. "Ni" is perfective and "keri" exclamatory, and the poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "futa yori mi yori": "drawing near twice and three times," with "futa," two, playing on the lid of a box and "mi," three, on its body.
Fifth line, "au to seshi ma ni": "au" plays on meeting the deer and on the lid fitting the body of the box. By inversion it gives the reason dawn broke in the third line.
