14 The Moon over the Mountain Rim
Two or three days after the exchange written on the cock's feather, there came a night of brilliant moonlight. Izumi Shikibu went out near the veranda and sat gazing at the moon.
The woman is Izumi Shikibu, daughter of Ōe no Masamune and, as the wife of Tachibana no Michisada, Governor of Izumi, mother of Koshikibu no Naishi. The Prince of the Dazaifu is Prince Atsumichi, fourth son of Emperor Reizei, so called because he served as Governor-General of the Dazaifu.
Thinking of her, who must surely be watching the same moon, the prince wrote, "How are you? Are you looking at the moon?" and sent this poem.
Izumi Shikibu found it more charming than his usual letters, and remembering the bright moonlit night at his residence a few days before, when she had worried that someone might be watching, she replied on the spur of the moment with "Hitoyo mishi tsuki zo to omoedo nagamureba kokoro mo yukazu me wa sora ni shite."
The opening lines ask "do you, as I do, recall it?" where the verb means thoughts rising to the surface, that is, remembering, with an interrogative particle.
The remaining lines mean "the heart that grieves as it hangs its longing on the moon at the mountain rim," where the verb joins both setting one's thoughts upon the moon and the moon hanging on the ridge, with a particle of continuing action. Placing the grieving heart at the end by inversion, he uses the bright moon as a go-between and wishes that, though apart, she shares his feelings.
