Hitoyo mishi tsuki zo to omoedo nagamureba kokoro mo yukazu me wa sora ni shite

English Translation
I think: that one night
it was this same moon we gazed at,
yet as I watch it now
my heart finds no ease, and my eyes
wander, lost in the empty sky
Meaning
I tell myself it is the very moon we watched that one night, yet as I gaze at it my heart finds no peace, and my eyes drift absently across the sky.
Commentary
14 The Moon over the Mountain Rim

Two or three days after the exchange written on the cock's feather, there came a night of brilliant moonlight. Izumi Shikibu went out near the veranda and sat gazing at the moon.
The woman is Izumi Shikibu, daughter of Ōe no Masamune and, as the wife of Tachibana no Michisada, Governor of Izumi, mother of Koshikibu no Naishi. The Prince of the Dazaifu is Prince Atsumichi, fourth son of Emperor Reizei, so called because he served as Governor-General of the Dazaifu.
The prince's note, "Are you looking at the moon?" arrived with "Waga gotoku omoi wa izu ya yama no ha no tsuki ni kaketsutsu nageku kokoro o." Finding it more charming than his usual letters, and remembering the bright moonlit night at his residence a few days before, when she had worried that someone might be watching, she replied on the spur of the moment with this poem.
Even after sending her reply, she went on gazing at the moon alone until the night faded to dawn. The next night the prince came, but she did not know it.

The opening lines mean "I think it is the moon we saw that one night, yet," referring to the moon the two had watched at his residence, with a past-tense auxiliary, an emphatic particle and an adversative particle. The third line means "as I gaze at it."
The lower verses mean "my heart is not eased, and my eyes are in the sky," where "sora" means both the sky where the moon floats and an absent, wandering mind. Answering his "moon" and "grieving heart," she says frankly that even the moon of their memory cannot lift her spirits, conveying the frustration of being unable to meet.
