Kuyashiku mo shizu no fuseya to otoshimete tsuki no moru o mo shirade sugikeru

English Translation
To my deep regret,
scorning it as a poor man's
low and humble hut,
never knowing how the moon
leaked within, I passed it by.
Meaning
To my regret, I looked down on it as the low hut of a humble man and went on by, never knowing how the moonlight leaked in there.
Commentary
Autumn Poems 347

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "When I composed many poems on the moon"
This is the eleventh poem in the moon series. The poet has passed by, scorning it as the rough hut of a humble man, and now regrets that he never knew the beauty of moonlight leaking in through the gaps of its roof and walls. The poem expresses a heart that has realized that the charm of the moon lies precisely in such humble dwellings.
It echoes 303, which sang of the loneliness of moonlight leaking into a hut, and the next poem also sings of the moon leaking into a grass hut, so two poems on the moon leaking into a humble dwelling follow here.

First line, “kuyashiku mo”: regrettably, setting out the regret at the start.
Second line, “shizu no fuseya to”: shizu is a person of low rank and fuseya a low, humble house.
Third line, “otoshimete”: looking down on it with scorn.
Fourth line, “tsuki no moru o mo”: even that the moonlight leaked in through the gaps.
Fifth line, “shirade sugikeru”: de is a negative conjunctive particle, I passed by without knowing; keru, the attributive of keri, closes with feeling in response to mo in the first line.
