Love Poems 618
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "The moon"
As the poet gazes at the moon, troubled by love, his heart seems to dwell on the moon's face. If anyone were to see it there, he says, surely they would feel pity for it. There is also a hope that the beloved too might be looking at this moon.
It was included in the Gyokuyōshū.
First line, “aware to mo”: aware is touching, pitiable, moving.
Second line, “miru hito araba”: if there were someone to see it, with the beloved in mind.
Third line, “omoinan”: na intensifies and n is conjectural: surely they would feel. The poem breaks after the third line.
Fourth line, “tsuki no omote ni”: on the face of the moon, answering the topic.
Fifth line, “yadoru kokoro wa”: the heart that dwells there, returning in inversion to the upper verse.
