'Ah, well,' I sigh, and nothing
but this world comes to mind,
and it grows so hard to hold,
this heart of mine, steady now.

Love Poems 619
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "The moon"
Looking at the moon, the poet sighs 'ah, well,' and can think only of the troubled bond between the lovers and of the world, until he can no longer keep his heart steady. The brooding of love, stirred up by the moon, grows beyond his control.
First line, “tsuki mireba”: when I look at the moon, answering the topic.
Second line, “ideya to yo nomi”: ideya is a sigh of discontent, ah well; yo is the world, and also the bond between lovers.
Third line, “omōete”: coming to mind of itself.
Fourth line, “motarinikuku mo”: hard to hold steady, the heart losing its composure.
Fifth line, “naru kokoro kana”: kana is exclamatory, lamenting the heart that becomes so.
