Love Poems 637
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "The moon"
Though the moon shines without a single shadow, the tears of love keep falling, harahara, so that it looks clouded. In ama no harahara, the sound runs from ama no hara, the plain of the sky, into harahara, the patter of falling tears, joining the sky where the moon is seen with the tears that fall in a single stream. The break between the fourth and fifth lines falls within a word, an unusual division of the lines.
First line, “namida yue”: because of tears.
Second line, “kuma naki tsuki zo”: kumanashi is without shadow; the binding particle zo answers the attributive nuru in the third line. This answers the topic.
Third line, “kumorinuru”: has clouded, closing in the attributive form answering zo; the poem breaks after the third line.
Fourth line, “ama no harahara”: the sound hara joins ama no hara, the plain of the sky, with harahara, tears falling drop by drop.
Fifth line, “to nomi nagarete”: only flowing so, an inversion giving the reason for the upper verse.
