Love Poems 639
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "The moon"
As the poet gazed at the moon, the beloved's figure rose before him as an image. From that moment, suddenly, the moon clouded over. It is left unsaid that the clouding is caused by the tears that overflow from his longing.
First line, “omokage ni”: omokage is the image of someone absent rising in the heart.
Second line, “kimi ga sugata o”: your figure.
Third line, “mitsuru yori”: yori marks the starting point: from the moment I saw it.
Fourth line, “niwaka ni tsuki no”: suddenly the moon, answering the topic.
Fifth line, “kumorinuru kana”: kana is exclamatory: how it has clouded! Tears are left unspoken as the cause.
