Love Poems 684
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Love"
Each time he remembers that such things once passed between them, a longing for the beloved wells up, and the poet tells himself to keep that longing hidden so that no one may know. Shinobu meaning to long for and shinobu meaning to endure and conceal are laid together, expressing both the heart stirred by memory and the will to restrain it.
First line, “saru koto no”: such a thing, what passed between the two.
Second line, “aru narikeri to”: narikeri marks realization: that it once was so.
Third line, “omoiidete”: remembering; the line has six syllables, one too many.
Fourth line, “shinobu kokoro o”: shinobu here is to long for, to yearn.
Fifth line, “shinobe to zo omou”: shinobu here is to endure and conceal, laid over the different sense in the fourth line; the binding particle zo is answered by the attributive omou.
