Love Poems 691
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Love"
The fire of Mount Fuji sending up its smoke and the fire of love burning in the poet's breast vie to see which is fiercer. Bearing so fierce a love, he travels toward Suruga, the province of Fuji. Omoi joins longing with hi, fire, and suruga joins suru, to do, as in loving, with the province of Suruga, so that the flame of love is laid over the smoke of Fuji.
First line, “keburi tatsu”: smoke rising, Mount Fuji sending up its plume.
Second line, “Fuji ni omoi no”: omoi is a pivot word joining love's longing with hi, fire, which vies with the fire of Fuji.
Third line, “arasoite”: vying with each other.
Fourth line, “yodakeki koi o”: yodakeshi is exaggerated, fierce.
Fifth line, “Suruga e zo yuku”: suruga is a pivot word joining suru, to do, as in loving, with the province of Suruga; the binding particle zo is answered by the attributive yuku.
