Love Poems 692
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Love"
The channel where the river of tears swirls back on itself is so deep at its bottom that the water does not swell up and overflow. The poet is taken to say that his heart likewise holds its fiercely churning feelings deep inside, unable to let them spill out. Mio joins a river's channel with mi o, oneself, and the depth of the river conveys both fierce feeling and a hidden love that cannot show it.
First line, “namidagawa”: a river of tears.
Second line, “sakamaku mio no”: sakamaku is for water to swirl back on itself, and mio is a pivot word joining a river's channel with mi o, myself.
Third line, “soko fukami”: mi is a suffix of cause: since it is so deep at the bottom.
Fourth line, “minagiriaenu”: minagiru is for water to swell and overflow, and aenu means unable to complete it: taken to mean it cannot overflow.
Fifth line, “waga kokoro kana”: kana is exclamatory, lamenting such a heart.
