Love Poems 702
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Love"
If it became known that he loves her, the beloved too would suffer painful rumors. To spare her, the poet tries to hide his tears, but the tears on his sleeves cannot be hidden no matter what. The poem expresses consideration for the beloved, hiding his love not for his own sake but for hers, and the tears that overflow all the same.
First line, “koiraruru”: raruru is passive: being loved by me.
Second line, “ukina o hito ni”: ukina is painful gossip, and hito the beloved.
Third line, “tateji tote”: ji is negative intention: so as not to raise such rumors.
Fourth line, “shinobu warinaki”: warinashi is hopeless: hopeless at hiding.
Fifth line, “waga tamoto kana”: kana is exclamatory, lamenting the tear-wet sleeves.
