by a heart grown pure and clean,
I have come to know
the Law that unties the jewel
sewn in the lining of my robe.

Headnote: "The chapter on the Five Hundred Disciples"
The topic is the chapter on the prophecy for the Five Hundred Disciples, which tells the parable of the jewel in the robe: a man fell asleep drunk, and his friend sewed a precious jewel into the lining of his robe, but he lived in poverty unaware of it until he was told. The jewel is the Buddha-nature all people possess from the first. Polished of itself by a pure heart, I have come to know the Law that unties the jewel in the robe, the poet says.

First line, “onozukara”: of itself.
Second line, “kiyoki kokoro ni”: by a pure heart.
Third line, “migakarete”: being polished, related to the jewel.
Fourth line, “tama toki kakuru”: untying the jewel hung within the robe, drawing on the parable.
Fifth line, “nori o shirinuru”: I have come to know the Law, closing in the attributive with a sigh.
