Headnote: "The Devadatta chapter"
The topic is the Devadatta chapter of the Lotus Sutra, which tells how an eight-year-old dragon girl offered a jewel to the Buddha and at once attained Buddhahood. Polishing forth a pure jewel in her heart, she attained enlightenment though only a child, the poet says, praising the dragon girl. It takes up 'jewel' and 'polished' from the preceding poem.
First line, “isagiyoki”: pure, taking up 'kiyoki kokoro' of the preceding poem.
Second line, “tama o kokoro ni”: the jewel the dragon girl offered, also standing for the Buddha-nature in the heart.
Third line, “migakiidete”: polishing it forth, taking up 'migakarete'; a line of six syllables.
Fourth line, “iwakenaki mi ni”: though so young, the eight-year-old girl.
Fifth line, “satori o zo eshi”: zo is answered by the attributive shi; she attained enlightenment.
