Miscellaneous Poems 927
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "When, ill with a cold, I was returning to my mountain temple, people came to see me off, saying, 'When you are better, come again soon,' and thinking of each one's kindness / There were replies too, but those I did not hear of I have not written down"
This is the fourth of the five. How full of sorrow in so many ways is this parting, as I go leaving my heart behind at your house, the poet says, expressing his reluctance to leave those who came to see him.
First line, “samazama ni”: in many ways.
Second line, “aware ōkaru”: full of sorrow.
Third line, “wakare kana”: kana is exclamatory; the poem breaks here.
Fourth line, “kokoro o kimi ga”: my heart, at your.
Fifth line, “yado ni todomete”: leaving it at your house, inverted to follow the third line.
