Kaeredomo hito no nasake ni shitawarete kokoro wa mi ni mo sowazu narinuru

English Translation
Though I go back home,
drawn by the kindness of all
who have cared for me,
my heart no longer stays with
this body of mine at all.
Meaning
Though I return to my temple, drawn by everyone's kindness, my heart no longer keeps company with my body.
Commentary
Miscellaneous Poems 928

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "When, ill with a cold, I was returning to my mountain temple, people came to see me off, saying, 'When you are better, come again soon,' and thinking of each one's kindness / There were replies too, but those I did not hear of I have not written down"
This is the last of the five. Though I return to my mountain temple, drawn by everyone's kindness, my heart has left my body, the poet says. Taking up 'leaving my heart at your house,' he tells how, though the body goes home, the heart stays with them, closing the five.

First line, “kaeredomo”: though I go back.
Second line, “hito no nasake ni”: by people's kindness.
Third line, “shitawarete”: re is spontaneous; drawn without willing it.
Fourth line, “kokoro wa mi ni mo”: the heart, to my body, taking up the preceding poem.
Fifth line, “sowazu narinuru”: it no longer keeps with me, closing in the attributive with a sigh.
