Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
As if its light had vanished, the moon of the foothills does not filter through the trees, while the valley looks white as though snow lay on the treetops, the poet says. It seems to picture moonlight pouring over the tops of the trees, white as snow, so that none filters down beneath them.
First line, “kage kiete”: its light vanishing.
Second line, “hayama no tsuki wa”: hayama are low hills near the villages, as against the deep mountains.
Third line, “mori mo kozu”: not even filtering through; the poem breaks here.
Fourth line, “tani wa kozue no”: the valley, the treetops, seen from above.
Fifth line, “yuki to mietsutsu”: looking like snow, the moonlight's whiteness likened to snow.
