Miscellaneous Poems 991
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
To my brushwood hut, deep in the mountains and shrouded in haze, the only visitor who speaks is the warbler's voice, the poet says, expressing both the loneliness and the comfort of a spring mountain dwelling where only the warbler calls. Poems on the warbler continue from here to 994.
First line, “yama fukami”: since the mountains are deep, an adjective stem with mi giving the reason.
Second line, “kasumi kometaru”: shrouded in haze.
Third line, “shiba no io ni”: to the humble brushwood hut; a line of six syllables.
Fourth line, “kototou mono wa”: kototou is to come and speak.
Fifth line, “uguisu no koe”: ending on a noun, the voice of the warbler that heralds spring.
