Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
With the sound of the wind, the autumn dusk dyes the color of my brooding heart and sinks deep into me, the poet says, picturing how the sound of the evening wind in autumn dyes the brooding heart a deeper color and pierces through the body.
First line, “kaze no oto ni”: with the sound of the wind; a line of six syllables.
Second line, “mono omou waga”: of me who broods.
Third line, “iro somete”: dyeing the heart's color.
Fourth line, “mi ni shimiwataru”: sinking deep into me, shimi following from the dyeing of the third line.
Fifth line, “aki no yūgure”: ending on a noun, autumn dusk, held to be the height of loneliness.
