Headnote: "At the lodging called Furuya"
Composed at Furuya, Old House, a lodging in Ōmine. In the tenth month, the moon that shines over Furuya where the showers fall cannot be trusted, though its light is unclouded now, since at any moment the showers may cloud it, the poet says.
The name Furuya pivots with the "falling" of showers, and sumu with "dwell" and "be clear," painting the moon as if it had settled into the old house. Three poems in a row begin "Kannazuki," forming a sequence on showers and the moon at Azumaya and Furuya.
First line, “Kannazuki”: the tenth month, repeating the first line of the two preceding poems.
Second line, “shigure furuya ni”: furu pivots on showers "falling" and the "old" of Furuya, the lodging's name.
Third line, “sumu tsuki wa”: sumu pivots on "dwelling" in Furuya and the moon "being clear."
Fourth line, “kumoranu kage mo”: even its light, unclouded for now.
Fifth line, “tanomarenu kana”: re is potential and nu negative, "cannot be relied on," with exclamatory kana.
