Aware tote hana mishi mine ni na o tomete momiji zo kyō wa tomo ni furikeru

English Translation
Leaving his name here
on the peak where once he gazed
at blossoms, moved—
today it is autumn leaves
that fall, growing old with it.
Meaning
On the peak where he once gazed at blossoms, moved to sorrow, he left his name; today it is the autumn leaves that fall upon it, growing old together with it.

Headnote: "Seeing autumn leaves fall upon a stupa board inscribed with the name of Byōdōin, and recalling that he had written 'besides the blossoms,' I felt that it was already long ago and was moved to compose this"
In Ōmine, Saigyō saw autumn leaves falling on a stupa board inscribed with the name of Gyōson, the Archbishop of Byōdōin, and, moved that it was already long since Gyōson wrote "besides the blossoms," composed this. On the peak where Gyōson, moved, once viewed the blossoms, his name remains, and today the autumn leaves fall upon it, growing old along with it.
The poem draws on Gyōson's poem composed in Ōmine, "Morotomo ni aware to omoe yamazakura hana yori hoka ni shiru hito mo nashi" (Kin'yōshū), taking up its words aware, hana, and morotomo. Against the spring blossoms of Gyōson, Saigyō sees autumn leaves, communing across the seasons with an ascetic forerunner.

First line, “aware tote”: "moved," taking up Gyōson's "aware to omoe."
Second line, “hana mishi mine ni”: on the peak where Gyōson saw the mountain cherry, answering hana in the source poem.
Third line, “na o tomete”: leaving his name written on the stupa board.
Fourth line, “momiji zo kyō wa”: zo is emphatic, answered by keru; autumn leaves are set against blossoms, autumn against spring.
Fifth line, “tomo ni furikeru”: furi pivots on leaves "falling" and "growing old" with the stupa board, answering morotomo ni in the source poem.
