Headnote: "As the light of the setting sun faded, the moon shone into my window"
Composed as the setting sun's light faded and the moon shone in at the window. Replacing the sunset light that had come through the window, the evening moon renews the light.
The poem catches the instant when the light at the window changes from sun to moon; the quiet passage of time as the setting sun gives way to the evening moon is concentrated at a single window.
First line, “sashikitsuru”: that had been shining in; tsuru is the attributive of the perfective.
Second line, “mado no irihi o”: the setting sun at the window.
Third line, “aratamete”: renewing, afresh.
Fourth line, “hikari o kauru”: exchanging the light, sunlight for moonlight.
Fifth line, “yūzukuyo kana”: yūzukuyo is the evening moon; kana is exclamatory.
