Headnote: "When people composed on the topic 'Enjoying the cool in the shade of trees'"
Composed when the company took the topic "Enjoying the cool in the shade of trees." Today again I will go to the hill where the wind blows through the pines, hoping to meet the friend I enjoyed the cool with yesterday.
The coolness of summer shade and fellowship with a friend met there are laid together, joining the wish for coolness with fondness for a person. It is a light and friendly poem.

First line, “kyō mo mata”: today again, as yesterday, answering "yesterday" in the fourth line.
Second line, “matsu no kaze fuku”: where the cool wind blows through the pines.
Third line, “oka e yukan”: n is volitional, "I will go"; the line is overlong and the poem breaks here.
Fourth line, “kinō suzumishi”: with whom I took the cool yesterday.
Fifth line, “tomo ni au ya to”: ya questions, "whether I may meet my friend," the inversion giving the purpose.
