spreading all across the yard
in the village of Ōhara.

Commentary
Miscellaneous Poems 1214

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Reply"
The seventh of Jakunen's ten. In the mountain wind the little chestnuts of the peak come pattering down to cover the garden in Ōhara.
The onomatopoeia harahara vividly conveys the sound and sight of falling nuts. Answering Saigyō's 1202 on gathering horse chestnuts in mountain life, it sings of autumn in Ōhara where nuts fall.

First line, “yamakaze ni”: in the mountain wind.
Second line, “mine no sasaguri”: sasaguri are small wild chestnuts.
Third line, “harahara to”: an onomatopoeia for things falling one after another.
Fourth line, “niwa ni ochishiku”: falling and spreading over the garden.
Fifth line, “ōhara no sato”: ending on a noun, the last line shared by the series.
