Headnote: "On my way to visit Ryūmon"
On the way to Ryūmonji in Yamato, Saigyō composed this. As he crosses the swift-flowing Miyataki River, he feels his heart grow clear to its very depths.
The Miyataki River is the upper Yoshino, Miyataki long famous for its scenery. Crossing swift, pure water seems to purify the heart, a poem laying clear water over a clear heart.
First line, “se o hayami”: mi expresses cause, "since the current is swift."
Second line, “miyatakigawa o”: the river near Miyataki on the Yoshino.
Third line, “watariyukeba”: as I cross; the line has an extra syllable.
Fourth line, “kokoro no soko no”: to the depths of my heart, echoing the riverbed.
Fifth line, “sumu kokochi suru”: I feel it grow clear.
