Miscellaneous Poems 1438
Headnote: none
Fushimi is passed; he will not stop at Okanoya either, but ride on to Hino and test his horse, the poet says.
Naming Fushimi, Okanoya, and Hino, places southeast of the capital, one after another, it is a brisk poem of advancing on horseback. Full of extra syllables, its string of place names conveys the momentum of travel.
First line, “fushimi suginu”: nu is perfective, "Fushimi is passed"; the line has an extra syllable and the poem breaks here.
Second line, “okanoya ni nao”: at Okanoya, still; the line has an extra syllable.
Third line, “todomaraji”: ji is negative volition, "I will not stop"; the poem breaks here.
Fourth line, “hino made yukite”: going as far as Hino.
Fifth line, “koma kokoromin”: n is volitional, "I will test my horse."
