Headnote: none
On Hanazono Hill, where the showers have begun, autumn ends and renews the colors of its brocade of leaves, the poet says.
Hanazono Hill, in the Hanazono district west of the capital, pairs the "flower" of its name with the autumn "brocade." Drawing on the waka tradition that showers dye the leaves, it depicts the leaves deepening their color as autumn ends. After the showers of the preceding poem, this is another poem of showers and leaves.
First line, “shigure somuru”: the showers beginning; the line has an extra syllable.
Second line, “hanazonoyama ni”: on the hill of Hanazono near the capital.
Third line, “aki kurete”: autumn drawing to an end.
Fourth line, “nishiki no iro o”: the brocade color of the leaves.
Fifth line, “aratamuru kana”: renewing it; kana is exclamatory.
