Kannazuki ariake no sora no shigururu o mata ware naranu hito ya miruramu

English Translation
In the godless month,
the dawn sky with the moon still out
falls in drizzling showers —
I wonder if there is another
besides me who watches it too
Meaning
In the tenth month the dawn sky, with the moon still lingering, falls into showers; is there someone besides me who is watching it too?
Commentary
Book Nine Miscellaneous Poems I 324

Gazing at showers falling from the dawn sky of the tenth month, the poet wonders whether anyone besides herself is watching the same scene. The poem conveys the loneliness of watching dawn showers after a sleepless night and a longing for someone who shares the same feeling.
Poem 313 of this book also sings of the showers of the tenth month, and the two poems turn their thoughts to the same scene.

The first line, "kannazuki," names the tenth month, the season of showers.
The second line, "ariake no sora no," refers to the dawn sky with the moon still out.
The third line, "shigururu o" (falling in showers), uses the same word as poems 313 and 314 of this book.
The fourth line, "mata ware naranu," refers to someone other than myself.
The final line, "hito ya miruramu," forms a kakari-musubi of "ya" and the attributive "ramu": is there someone who watches it?
