Autumn Poems 291
Headnote: "Composed on beating cloth"
Waking in the night as he sleeps alone, the poet is deeply moved by the sound of the fulling block drifting from the village of Fushimi. He lends deep pathos to the sound of beaten cloth heard in the loneliness of sleeping alone.
Line 1 means "sleeping alone." Following "must I sleep alone" in 231 and 267, it sings of a night of solitary sleep.
Line 2: zo is a binding particle, stressing what is heard on waking. It takes up "when I wake and listen" in 289.
Line 3, aware naru, is the attributive concluding zo, "so moving," and the poem pauses here.
Line 4: fushimi is a pivot word meaning both the place Fushimi in Yamashiro and fushi, "lying down," echoing the solitary sleep of line 1.
Line 5 ends on a noun, giving last, through inversion, the fulling block's sound that stirs pathos. This line closes the five poems on beating cloth.
