Nurete oru sode no tsukikage fukenikeri magaki no kiku no hana no ue no tsuyu

English Translation
As I pluck them, drenched,
on my sleeve the moonlight shines
deep into the night—
on the chrysanthemums by the fence,
the dew upon the flowers.
Meaning
As I pick them, wet with dew, the moonlight on my sleeve has grown late—the dew upon the chrysanthemum flowers by the fence.
Commentary
Autumn Poems 292

Headnote: "On picking chrysanthemums on a moonlit night"
As the poet tries to pick chrysanthemums on a moonlit night, wetting his sleeves with the dew on the flowers, the moonlight reflected on his sleeve becomes the light of deep night. Gathering chrysanthemum, dew, and moonlight on a single sleeve, he portrays the clear scene of a late-autumn night.
This poem was included in the Shinchokusen Wakashū. The Ruijū text gives the headnote as "On picking chrysanthemum flowers on a moonlit night." Kamo no Mabuchi marked it with a circle.

Line 1 means "picking them wet with dew." Like the heart in 217 that would pick the maidenflower even if soaked by dew, it sings of plucking flowers while wet with dew.
Line 2 refers to the moonlight reflected on the wet sleeve.
Line 3: keri expresses realization, and the poem pauses here; it is the same as line 3 of 270.
Line 4 means "of the chrysanthemums by the fence." Three poems from here through 294 sing of chrysanthemums.
Line 5 is hypermetric and ends on a noun, giving last the dew that wet the sleeve.
