Winter Poems 320
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "From among poems on early winter"
Perhaps because the showers of the tenth month have fallen, the poet sings, the oak leaves on the hills of Nara are fading and scattering in the wind. He repeats the same sound in "Nara" and nara, "oak," and lets the poem flow with an easy rhythm.
The Teika text gives line 5 as kate ni utsurou, which the source's editor judges to be an error.
Line 1 is the same word as line 3 of the preceding poem and continues into the opening of the next.
Line 2 means "is it because the showers fell?"; ka is an interrogative binding particle concluded in line 5.
Line 3 names the hills of Nara on the border of Yamato and Yamashiro.
Line 4 refers to the broad leaves of the oak, repeating the sound of "Nara" in line 3.
Line 5 concludes ka with the attributive form, showing the leaves fading and falling.
