Winter Poems 321
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "From among poems on early winter"
Seeing the crimson leaves on the hills near the village at their height, the poet surmises that showers must be falling in the deep mountains. Resting on the idea that showers dye the leaves, he sets the far mountains against the near hills.
Line 1 is the same as that of the preceding poem; from line 3 of 319, three poems in a row sing the tenth month.
Line 2: rashi is a conjecture based on evidence, and the poem pauses here.
Line 3 names afterward, by inversion, the place where the showers of line 2 are falling.
Line 4 pairs with the deep mountains of line 3, naming the leaves of the hills near the village.
Line 5 declares that the leaves of the near hills are now at their height.
