Winter Poems 323
Headnote: "Wind in the pines resembling winter showers"
This poem was composed on the theme of wind in the pines resembling showers. In a mountain village where the leaves have all fallen in the tenth month, the sound of wind in the pines is mistaken for the patter of showers. In the stillness after the rustle of leaves has ceased, the voice of the pines stands out all the more.
The Ruijū text gives the headnote in kana as "Wind in the pines resembles showers."
Line 1 is the fifth poem in a row since 319 to sing the tenth month.
Line 2 means "where the leaves have fallen like rain."
Line 3 is a village in the mountains.
Line 4 means "indistinguishable from showers." Line 2 of the next poem also uses magau, and the two poems sing the same theme.
Line 5: kana is exclamatory, giving last the wind in the pines that mingles with the showers.
