降らぬ夜も降る夜もまがふ時雨かな
木の葉の後の嶺の松風
Roma-ji

Furanu yo mo furu yo mo magau shigure kana ko no ha no nochi no mine no matsukaze

English Translation
On nights without rain,
on nights of rain, the same—
it seems a shower:
after all the leaves are gone,
the wind in the pines on the peaks.
Meaning
On nights without rain and nights with rain alike, I mistake it for a passing shower—the wind in the pines on the peaks, after all the leaves have fallen.
Commentary
Winter Poems 324

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Wind in the pines resembling winter showers"
After the leaves have fallen, the wind in the pines on the peaks sounds like showers on nights without rain as on nights with it. Like the preceding poem, this sings the theme of mistaking the wind in the pines for showers, and by pairing rainy and rainless nights it stresses that the sound of the pines is no different from the showers.
This poem was included in the Shingoshūi Wakashū.

Line 1 means "on nights without showers too," and pairs with line 2.
Line 2 means "on nights of showers too, it is confused with them." It takes up "mingling with the showers" in line 4 of the preceding poem.
Line 3: kana is exclamatory and the poem pauses here; by inversion, the lower lines reveal afterward what the sound is.
Line 4 means "after the leaves have all fallen."
Line 5 ends on a noun, revealing last what the shower-like sound truly is. It answers "how the wind blows through the pines" at the end of the preceding poem.
