Winter Poems 325
Headnote: "Fallen leaves on the water"
This poem was composed on the theme of fallen leaves on the water. Seeing drifting leaves gathered in an inlet, the poet sings that by this bond autumn lingers there long after it has ended by the calendar. In the crimson leaves that remain into winter, he sees the trace of the departed autumn.
The Ruijū text places this poem in the autumn section and gives the lower lines as kurete no nochi wa aki mo hisashiki, and the Teika text gives kurete no nochi mo aki no hisashiki.
Line 1 refers to leaves flowing down the stream.
Line 2 tells of the drifting leaves gathering where the water stands still.
Line 3 is hypermetric; enishi is a pivot word meaning both e, "inlet," and enishi, "bond."
Line 4 means "even after autumn has ended."
Line 5 ends on the attributive form of an adjective, leaving a lingering feeling. The autumn declared gone in 312 here lingers long among the pooling leaves.
