Winter Poems 354
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On an occasion when I had many people compose on the theme of plovers by the sea"
This poem was composed on the same occasion as the preceding one. On a cold night, as the wind in the pines of the bay blows wild, plovers cry over the waves of the Mushiake strait. The poet layers the plovers' voices over the roar of pines and waves to portray a winter night by the sea.
The Ruijū text gives line 3 as fukimusubi and the Teika text gives fukimusebi. Kamo no Mabuchi marked it with a circle.
Line 1 means "because the night is cold," the same as the opening of 331.
Line 2 is the wind in the pines blowing over the bay.
Line 3 means "blowing wild and fierce."
Line 4 names the waves of the Mushiake strait, a poetic place in Bizen.
Line 5 is the same as that of 351.
