Winter Poems 355
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On an occasion when I had many people compose on the theme of plovers by the sea"
This poem was composed on the same occasion as the two preceding ones. As the moon shines clear and the night grows late, the cries of plovers are heard from the bay of Ichishi in Ise. In the stillness of moonlight and deepening night, the poet hears the plovers far away.
This poem was included in the Gyokuyō Wakashū. The Ruijū text gives line 4 as ichishi no ura no. Kamo no Mabuchi gave it a double circle and commented that a poem could hardly be more perfectly composed, and that it casts aside all the flourishes that people commonly prize.
Line 1 uses mi to show cause, "because the moon is clear," the same words as line 3 of 341.
Line 2 means "as the night grows late," built the same way as line 2 of the next poem.
Line 3 refers to the coast of Ise, with ya an exclamatory particle.
Line 4 names the bay of Ichishi in Ise.
Line 5 is the same as that of 351 and of the preceding poem, and the next poem ends with it too.
