Winter Poems 364
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Snow"
As evening comes, the sea wind turns cold, and snow keeps falling on a little island glimpsed between the waves. Where the two preceding poems inferred snow on mountains out of sight, this one sings the snow on an island floating before the poet's eyes.
This poem was included in the Shokugosen Wakashū. Kamo no Mabuchi marked it with a circle.
Line 1 is the same as that of the two preceding poems, the third of the evening snow poems.
Line 2 is built the same way as "the bay wind is cold" in the preceding poem, and the poem pauses here.
Line 3 means "from between the waves."
Line 4 means "on the little island that can be seen." Line 4 of the next poem also uses miyuru, "can be seen."
Line 5 stops on the continuative tsutsu, leaving a lingering sense of snow falling on and on. Whereas the two preceding poems inferred with rashi, this one sings snow that is seen.
