Winter Poems 365
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Snow"
As the sky brightens fully at dawn, clouds trail across it, and through their gaps the white snow on the high peak comes into view. The poet catches the snowy peak floating in the morning light as a glimpse through the breaks in the clouds.
This poem was included in the Shinchokusen Wakashū.
Line 1 uses mi to show cause, "because the mountain is high."
Line 2 means "as the night fully gives way to dawn."
Line 3 is the cloud trailing sideways across the dawn sky.
Line 4 means "seen through the gaps," and like "the little isle I glimpse" in the preceding poem, it uses miyuru for the scene that meets the eye.
Line 5 ends on a noun, giving last the snow seen between the clouds. The next poem also sees a snowy peak in the dawn sky, so two poems of dawn snow follow each other.
