Winter Poems 366
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Snow"
Gazing out into the distance, the poet sees the snow of Fuji's high peak gleaming white far off in the sky at dawn. He portrays, within the wide sky of daybreak, the snowy Fuji that a poet living in the East would know so well.
Line 1 means "as I look out into the distance."
Line 2 means "far off in the sky."
Line 3 declares "the snow is white," and the poem pauses here.
Line 4 names the high peak of Mount Fuji in Suruga.
Line 5 ends on a noun, giving the dawn sky against which the snow's whiteness stands out. After the dawn snow on the peak in the preceding poem, this sings the snow of Fuji. Poem 333 also ends on a sky, "the sky before the dawn."
