Winter Poems 367
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Snow"
Gazing at Muro no Yashima in Shimotsuke, a place known for its rising smoke, the poet finds something lonely in the fire smoldering beneath the snow. He contrasts the white snow with the fire burning hidden beneath it.
The Ruijū text gives the headnote as "Composed on snow." Muro no Yashima is a poetic place sung for its rising smoke.
Line 1 means "as I gaze lost in thought."
Line 2: ka is exclamatory, and the poem pauses here. Line 2 of 375 is the same.
Line 3 describes the smoke rising from Muro no Yashima.
Line 4 names Muro no Yashima, a poetic place in Shimotsuke.
Line 5 ends on a noun, the fire smoldering unseen beneath the snow.
