Winter Poems 374
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Snow"
Shut in for the winter in his hut deep in Yoshino, the poet sings that the snow has piled up and no one comes to call. He carries on the loneliness of the mountain village in the preceding poem, placing himself in a hut in the depths of Yoshino.
Line 1 is the same as the opening of the Kokin Wakashū poem by the monk Kisen about his hut southeast of the capital.
Line 1 means "my hut is."
Line 2 names the depths of Yoshino in Yamato. Line 2 of 383 is the same.
Line 3 is staying shut indoors through the winter, and the poem pauses here.
Line 4 means "the snow has fallen and piled up."
Line 5 is the same as that of the preceding poem, so two poems in a row sing the loneliness of being shut in by snow.
